The Waterbury Development Corporation (WDC) is the City of Waterbury's official economic and community development entity. The Corporation was founded as a partnership of the public and private sectors to help the City of Waterbury, its businesses, and its residents revitalize their city, stimulate and support economic development, promote investment in education, rehabilitate and maintain the City's housing stock, eliminate urban blight and decay, and improve the overall quality of life. In order to better serve the City, the WDC is organized into three groups:
The Business Growth Group manages projects and programs that are designed to advance the city's business economy. Areas of specialization include business recruitment and retention, assisted site selection, coordination of local and state resources, and the development of Brownfield projects. The group also administers four loan funds as well as a number of city tax incentives.
The Neighborhood Re-Investment Group manages projects and programs that promote city housing and community development. The group administers a number of state and federal grants; they also work together with various neighborhood organizations to obtain localized, independent community grants. The group has also put together a Blight Team, which works hands-on in the community cleaning up neighborhoods and promoting city beautification efforts.
The Project Management Group helps plan and direct a number of state and municipal construction projects in Waterbury. The group also coordinates with the Neighborhood Re-Investment group to manage community projects funded by the CDBG program. Most recently, the group is involved with the restoration of City Hall, and is also working on improving the permitting process in the city.
As Connecticut's fifth largest city, Waterbury has a wealth of business, education and cultural resources. What's more, with a unique location at the intersection of two major highways, Waterbury is attracting renewed business interest and investment as we move towards a strong future in advanced technology, finance and modern manufacturing. The WDC is Waterbury's first comprehensive economic and community development organization, and as such, we are committed to building Waterbury's future!
